Index to Catalyst Nos 1-19

By G.C.Chapman – updated to 3 February 2005

Notes

The CATALYST series in A4 format started in January 2000. CATALYST Nos 1 (January 2000) to No 19 (January 2005) are indexed in a separate Excel file.

The aim in indexing has been to include references which may be of lasting interest and applicability to sailing craft design, performance etc. Omitted are AYRS administrative details e.g. AGMs, Committees, subscriptions and speculative chit-chat – particularly by e-mail! Nevertheless, there are gems of information, some personal, which are included, as well as reports of events, in particular Speed Weeks.

Looking over the Index I realise that it is not as comprehensively detailed as AYRS’ Publications Index; but with this computerised index the user will readily be able to add their own entries to make up the deficiencies. Not every boat mention is included.

As in the Publications Index, the columns are:-

1  Item

2  For CATALYST, e.g. C3 p6 is page 6 in CATALYST No 3.

3  Subject Chapter letter, as in Publications Index, and below.

4  Author/Owner/Designer/Builder and/or other reference.

Chapter contents are listed below. Occasionally I found that the description I wanted was in a chapter whose heading might be thought to exclude the item, e.g ‘instrumentation’ is equally applicable full size as to ‘Models’.  Too bad! There are a considerable number of double entries.

In particular, and as in the Newsletter Index,  Chapter N (for Names) includes every entry against the name of its author etc in the right hand column. (In the Main Index the names are in the left hand column). Chapter M ( NaMed craft) is separated so that the craft names are arranged alphabetically on the left.

The Chapter Contents list is:

A Aerodynamics – wind effects
B Construction – materials, design, structural stresses, costs
C Cruising – accommodation, voyages
D Dry sailing – ice boats, land yachts
E Hull shape – float cross-section, shape
F Hydrodynamics – theory, hull resistance, planing, steering, keels, rudders, centreboards, daggerboards – (hapas are in I)
G Hydrofoils – theory, types, experience
Competitions, Prizes (Not for Racing)
I Kites – hapas, gliders, tethered rigs, low flying boats, Wing-In-Ground craft (WIG)
J Instrumentation, scaling laws, test tanks, wind tunnels, experiments whether full size or with models.
K Monohulls – types, canoes
L Multihulls – catamarans, trimarans, proas. LC, LT, LP subdivide accordingly.
M Named craft – private names & model names, including names of generic designs
N People – authors, designers, sailors, book reviews, obituaries, AYRS affairs
O Pictures – photos, technical drawings, lines plans, sketches
P Projects – members’ research and amateur home building
Q Propulsion – human, engine, solar (NOT wind), electrical generation & storage
R Racing – events, Speed Weeks, race reports, handicapping & rating rules, classes
